Developing Idea 1

I had an idea of what I want to do for the single image task straight away really. I wanted to layer up images to form one final image so I started to have a look around and I came across some images by Dan Mountfords that I really like.

I started to take some portraits of Jess because of her 1940s look. I asked her to stand against a distressed wall because I thought it would fit in with the Northeast assignment as it looks worn down and grungy. I think I will use one of the full-faced images to build up with other industrial images from around Hartlepool.
With the images below they were taken at night so when I uploaded them I put them into Photoshop and adjusted the levels to make the lips more vibrant and add highlights to her skin.

Sample 1

I have just had a quick go it layering up some images I went down to the harbour to get a long distance shot of the chemical plant on the other side as it is one of the places that represent the Northeast to me. I simply added both images into Photoshop then kept adding the image of the chemical plant over and over again on different levels of the face and erased any part of the image that i didn't want.

I am not really keen on this now I have done it. I'm not sure if its the colours or if it's because her facial features get a bit lost amongst everything. I also think it has something to do with the fact I already had an image made up in my mind before I had even started taking photos, and this doesn't match the image I have made in my mind.

For the second part of the assignment I was thinking of using these individual images of facial features for the series of images. Like before I would build the images up of other photos from around Hartlepool. This time they will be pictures that go with the right sense, like a picture of a nose will then have maybe a photo of the brewery layered on top because some days you can smell it all the way down at the harbour. And then for the other images take photos that stimulate the other senses like taste, hearing and sight.

Suren Manvelyan Photography

When I was looking at photographers that could help me with my idea of layering images to tell a story, I got a bit carried away and started to look at individual parts of the face and eyes were by far the most interesting. That's when I came across the work of Suren Manvelyan. He makes the eyes look like far away galaxies being draw in by black howls (The pupil). The image on the top right looks like someone has dropped a bomb in the dessert and the sand is getting blown back in waves.

Sample 2

I thought I would try layering up an image of an eye first because it's the most interesting feature on the face this time I have used images that I thought would go with the colours rather than location as I can focus on that later if this goes well.

These are the images that I will be using as a montage.

The outcome :

Compared to the full-faced image before I much prefer this photo montage and I think it is because you can still see the eye pretty clearly but the colours also match better that before.
